Ceiling Pendant Kits – with rods

You can use our solid Ceiling Kits to create a Ceiling Pendant Light rod style fitting with your choice of lamp shade, bulb and lampholder, ceiling rose and lamp flex.

If you don’t require a component from one of the product sections e.g. the bulb please just skip that stage using the flow chart or select “Clear selection” on the product page itself.

Do I need 2 or 3 core lamp flex?

When using any metal light fittings you need to earth the fitting to reduce the risk of electric shock. You therefore need to use our 3 core light flex in either our round or twisted braid as both have live, neutral and earth wires. Our 2 core braided flex only has live and neutral wires and therefore is only suitable for use with non-metal light fittings. If in any doubt please always refer to a qualified electrician.

Hanging Lampshades with a BC or ES hole

For Lamp shades weighing less than 2 kg you can use a cord grip lampholder with shade rings to hang your shade.
Then choose between a Bayonet Cap version with shade rings for a shade with a 32mm – 35mm hole; or an Edison screw version with shade rings for a shade with a 38mm – 45mm aperture. Next you need a ceiling rose with a cord grip and some earthed 3 core flex which will go between the lamp holder and the ceiling rose.

For shades over 2kg you need to support the flex by using some lighting chain and therefore need a lampholder with a hook and shade rings to hang your light shade. Then choose between a Bayonet Cap version with shade rings for a shade with a 32mm -35mm hole or an Edison screw version with shade rings for a shade with a 38mm – 45mm aperture. Next you need a ceiling rose with a hook and again some earthed 3 core flex which goes between the lampholder and the ceiling hook. The chain you need is our large link chain. This is sold in max of 10m single length. If your drop is more than that, lengths of chain can be joined using an S hook. Max shade weight is 5kg using a single hook. How do I know how much lighting cable I need to order?

In order to calculate how much lighting cable you are going to need try creating a mock up design using string instead of lighting cable. Once you are happy with your design simply measure the string for your required light flex length, and add a bit extra, 5-10% for inside the fittings.

How to wire up lampholders?

The earth is marked in the middle of the insert. The live is the one that from underneath you can see goes across to the centre of the insert.

What are your products weight tolerances?

For Lamp shades weighing less than 2 kg you can use a cord grip lampholder to hang your shade as this is the weight tolerance of the lighting flex.

Our Single Ceiling Hooks can hang, using a piece of our large chain, a light fitting up to max of 5kg. If you had 2 hooks & large chain you could hang 10kg and with one of our large triple hooks and large chain up to a maximum of 15kg. Obviously the fixing into the ceiling needs to be secure, you can add one of our wooden pattresses which can be secured using larger screws. If you fix this into a ceiling joist this can also add extra hold but you will need to consult a builder or electrician if hanging a heavy light fitting to keep you safe.

Our smaller chain is only suitable for hanging a ceiling bowl from our Triple bag ceiling hook as the chain link size is too small to fit over our larger hooks. The maximum weight of the shade should be 5kg as this is the weight tolerance of the triple ceiling hook.
